"Contemporary Scrimshaw"

Eva Halat, the author of Contemporary Scrimshaw, has many years of experience as a scrimshander, and her work is internationally known and highly regarded. Her book gives
readers a thorough introduction to this art, its history, and its status as art today.
She discusses materials, tools, and techniques in enough detail so, while not exactly an instructional book, Contemporary Scrimshaw will be of great utility to any beginning scrimshander.

First published in german language in 2003 by Verlag Angelika Hoernig,
Ludwigshafen, Germany. This English edition contains additional new material
supplied by the author including a new section on powder horns and billiard cues.

Taking advantage of her wide circle of acquaintances in this field, the author has devoted
almost two thirds of her book to a remarkable „gallery“ section. Here, often in their own words, she introduces the reader to 42 people, European as well as American artists, who are among the best scrimshanders in the world today, and she presents samples of their art in a virtually unique collection of extraordinary photographs. The artists‘ biographies and the technical sections contain hints and tips that may be of considerable interest to experienced scrimshaw artists.
